Kit Dunleavy: Jake's girlfriend and a student journalist for the school newspaper.

 

Alex Tolliver: The Fishermen's Bible-toting and -quoting star linebacker.

 

Rick Winslow: The Fishermen's sophomore quarterback, took over when the senior star was injured in the opening game.

 

Timmy Hilton: The Fishermen's star running back.

 

Annie Laughlin: The hot-headed chair of the radical Students for a Democratic Society's state chapter.

 

Larry Benson: A former World War II pilot and the Fishermen's head coach.

 

Neal Hassler: Cascade University's beleaguered president.     

 

During game week, Jake has assured both Benson and Hassler that he will attempt to exercise whatever influence he has over the disparate activist wings on campus to ensure that no protests connected to the game go too far. The excerpt below is most of Chapter 20 and all of Chapter 21.
