These
are samples of my press credentials I (sporadically) collected over the years. My conservative estimate is that I have covered
-- or at least have attended -- 4,000 sporting events on a working basis. For many games, of course, I used season credentials.
On the road when I was a beat writer or columnist following local teams, the single-game credential ended up in the hotel
room waste basket. I continued to hang on to the credentials from major events or give them away as souvenirs within the family.
The business evolved with newspapers
especially stepping away from carte blanche travel for sportswriters to attend national events. Sportswriters had a nice run
while that lasted. Most of these credentials -- from my stints at the Denver Post, Oregonian and The Sporting
News -- are from the highest-profile events. At the end, I've thrown on examples of other credentials I for some reason
threw in the box, including examples of season passes. They're more for fun than anything else. And please don't make fun
of the mullet. -- TF

Season credentials and miscellania
|
September 25, 1982: Penn State won and went on to be the consensus national champion.
I was sent to State College to cover this game and do an installment of the Post series on the powrs of college football.
|
Rockies season credential for my fifth and final season on the beat ... before the NHL team
moved to New Jersey. Nuggets season credential for the second of my two years on that beat. The Big Stuff, Chopper,
Alex, Dan and Kiki ...
|
November 1982: The USC-UCLA rivalry and a Raiders game. Multiply this by many more such junkets, wedged in on the Nuggets
beat and also when I was the full-time national writer. In the next three years, often the first thing anyone would say to
me at a game was: "Why's the Denver Post here?" With Times-Mirror money behind us with a mega-commitment
to sports during a newspaper war and a talented staff, we were used to the question.
